FAQ

Universal Badminton Rating (UBR) is a standardized rating system for recreational badminton players. It helps players quickly identify their skill level and facilitates appropriate match-ups for enjoyable, competitive, and rewarding games with others of similar proficiency.

The Universal Badminton Rating (UBR) is designed for all recreational badminton players, regardless of their skill level—whether beginners seeking improvement, experienced players, or top competitors in their local area. It allows players to find others at their skill level, participate in existing events, and organize new ones. While the UBR can be used effectively in competitive settings, its primary focus and most beneficial applications are in recreational environments where players engage regularly on a weekly basis.

With a UBR you can:
  • Receive an accurate assessment of your playing level for both singles and doubles.
  • Track your progress over time and compare results against specific opponents or teams.
  • Find players near you who are at your skill level.
  • Participate in UBR-exclusive events that require a UBR for entry.
  • Join and create/host events within the community, whether for the entire group or just with your friends.

Your rating adjusts based on your performance relative to expectations set by your current rating. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  • Expectations vs. Performance: Your rating reflects how well you're expected to perform. If you exceed these expectations, your rating increases. If you underperform, it decreases.
  • Game Results: After each game, your rating is recalculated based on the scores. The change in rating depends on whether you performed better or worse than expected.
  • Winning vs. Losing: You can lose a game and still have your rating increase if you performed better than expected. Conversely, you can win a game but see your rating decrease if you underperformed relative to expectations.

The UBR was developed by a dedicated team of badminton enthusiasts and mathematicians, boasting over 40 years of experience in playing badminton and organizing badminton programs. Through extensive trial and error, analysis of data from hundreds of thousands of games, and meticulous calculations, we’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to!

The UBR is currently free to use and enjoy!
